Thank you to Libro。fm for providing this arc audiobook of Family of Liars。 This was a great prequel to We Were Liars and tells the story of the Sinclairs, the older generation。 This was a surprisingly emotional read, it was creepy at times and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

If you liked "We Were Liars" you will like this book。 If you didn't, you won't。 It's a prequel but it contains spoilers to the other book。 It's a great teen/young adult fiction/mystery with a summer, yet dark vibe。 It reads great for an angsty teen。 As an adult - I read this fast and that worked for me。 Don't love it but I wasn't the target audience。 If you liked "We Were Liars" you will like this book。 If you didn't, you won't。 It's a prequel but it contains spoilers to the other book。 It's a great teen/young adult fiction/mystery with a summer, yet dark vibe。 It reads great for an angsty teen。 As an adult - I read this fast and that worked for me。 Don't love it but I wasn't the target audience。 。。。more

I went into reading this book immediately after rereading we were liars for the first time since its publication。 I think this book works really well structurally, thematically, and stylistically。 Firstly, structurally, it echoes the act structure of the original book。 The storytelling frame with Johnny acts as a nice connection to the original and introduces the flashback well, with the occasional callbacks to Johnny as an audience justifying the narrative style。 It is easy for this conversatio I went into reading this book immediately after rereading we were liars for the first time since its publication。 I think this book works really well structurally, thematically, and stylistically。 Firstly, structurally, it echoes the act structure of the original book。 The storytelling frame with Johnny acts as a nice connection to the original and introduces the flashback well, with the occasional callbacks to Johnny as an audience justifying the narrative style。 It is easy for this conversational style to feel odd to a reader, but Johnny as a middle point between reader and story, if only in name, makes this much easier to get into。Thematically and stylistically, I really enjoyed all the parallels with and references to the first book。 In my mind, the main task of a prequel is character building and this works really well in Family of Liars, even though many of the characters aren't technically born yet。 From setting up small things like sayings, traditions, or favourite books that are mentioned in we were liars to larger points - such as the black pearls that cause contention in we were liars or characterisation of Tipper and Harris, who miss out on this in we were liars - is really well handled。 Each bit was like unearthing a new gem that made sense of something in the original that you didn't even realise was missing。If you enjoyed we were liars, this is an absolute must-read。 If you haven't read we were liars, pick it up so you can read this! 。。。more

I approached this novel with care because I haven't read 'We Were Liars' but will obviously have to now。 This is the prequel to that。 This, of course, is a novel all about secrets and, surprise: lies。 This is about a family doused in grief with a drowned sister, the ghost of whom visits character, Caroline。 Meantime, Caroline is wrestling with the effects of facial surgery, but this doesn't stop the element of romance rolling in and, of course, the necessity to lie, or learn how to lie。 Lockhart I approached this novel with care because I haven't read 'We Were Liars' but will obviously have to now。 This is the prequel to that。 This, of course, is a novel all about secrets and, surprise: lies。 This is about a family doused in grief with a drowned sister, the ghost of whom visits character, Caroline。 Meantime, Caroline is wrestling with the effects of facial surgery, but this doesn't stop the element of romance rolling in and, of course, the necessity to lie, or learn how to lie。 Lockhart keeps a good grip on the narrative, and the result is a compelling but gentle psychological thriller with elements of several genres that keep the twists coming and the interest bubbling。 It's an enjoyable, entertaining novel and it works to keep the reader compelled to read on because of the mix of ingredients used。 Recommended。 Thanks to NetGalley for the Arc。 。。。more

So I read We Were Liars last year for book club, and it wasn't my favourite book of the year, but it also wasn't the worst。 I wanted to give Family Of Liars a shot, and hoped that it would be better。 In some ways it was, but in many others it really wasn't。 The story started extremely slow for me, and pretty quickly there is a tragedy to deal with and as we know the Sinclair's never explain and never complain, always that shiny perfection。 The characters come across as shallow, and unrelatable, So I read We Were Liars last year for book club, and it wasn't my favourite book of the year, but it also wasn't the worst。 I wanted to give Family Of Liars a shot, and hoped that it would be better。 In some ways it was, but in many others it really wasn't。 The story started extremely slow for me, and pretty quickly there is a tragedy to deal with and as we know the Sinclair's never explain and never complain, always that shiny perfection。 The characters come across as shallow, and unrelatable, and it wasn't until around 65 percent through that the story felt like it started to pick up。 Once the story started to improve for me, I found the book much more enjoyable, and the twist that we all know is there I didn't really see coming。 I just wish that it hadn't taken 65 percent of boredom to get that point in the first place。 The last 35 percent of the book read much more smoothly。 It's the last part that saved it for me, and got the 3 stars。 Thank you to Ntegallery and Hot Key Publishing for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I can’t say I loved this as much as We Were Liars。 I’m not even sure if the reason I enjoyed it so much was because of my love of the first book or if it is just a genuinely good book。 I loved finding out about the history on the Sinclair family, seeing the little nuggets of information that we weren’t privy to in the first book, the tension of wondering what exactly this big, terrible secret was going to be。 I’m not so sure the writing style of the first book was entirely effective when used he I can’t say I loved this as much as We Were Liars。 I’m not even sure if the reason I enjoyed it so much was because of my love of the first book or if it is just a genuinely good book。 I loved finding out about the history on the Sinclair family, seeing the little nuggets of information that we weren’t privy to in the first book, the tension of wondering what exactly this big, terrible secret was going to be。 I’m not so sure the writing style of the first book was entirely effective when used here, though。 I didn’t really like the use of fairytales like I did in We Were Liars, and the weird line breaks didn’t make me feel the words more strongly like they did before。 I do love a good plot twist though, a big reveals are very much my kind of thing。The only thing I felt a bit icky about was the whole thing of using sexuality as some plot twist or excuse for bad behaviour。 It felt very sudden and slapdash, like there needed to be an excuse and then once it was used it was barely mentioned again。All in all, I did enjoy this book and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who loved We Were Liars。 Big thanks to netgalley for providing me with a digital arc in exchange for an honest review! 。。。more

I loved We Were Liars, and was so excited to find out Lockhart was publishing a prequel。 Revisiting the Sinclair family wasn’t easy—the deception and heartache is woven into their family tapestry。 This book did a great job keeping true to the mystery and intrigue of We Were Liars while also being a standalone story。 Though it left some unanswered questions for me at the end, the writing and character development made this an absolute page turner。

I enjoyed this prequel to “we were liars” and read the entire book while on a flight。 The story centers on Carrie and is mostly told in the past when she was a teenager spending her summers with her family on a secluded island off of the coast of Massachusetts。 Though much is this story is more day to day events leading up to the “big event”, there is a sense of foreboding along with overall character development that held my interest throughout。 There are a couple side stories going on as well, I enjoyed this prequel to “we were liars” and read the entire book while on a flight。 The story centers on Carrie and is mostly told in the past when she was a teenager spending her summers with her family on a secluded island off of the coast of Massachusetts。 Though much is this story is more day to day events leading up to the “big event”, there is a sense of foreboding along with overall character development that held my interest throughout。 There are a couple side stories going on as well, which I thought were fascinating backdrops to the main event。 The characters were well drawn and I empathized with Carrie even when she did the wrong things。All in all, a great prequel that can absolutely be read as a stand-alone (though does provide spoilers to the other book)。 I enjoyed it and hope the author gives us more stories revolving around the Sinclair family。 。。。more
